One of NSR’s top athletes, Mary Argall (VIC) was a promising prospect since day one, when she first joined NSR in 2012. Mary attracted the attention of various US coaches, but when the offer came through from Coach Casey at Waldorf College, she knew it was a perfect fit.

Once at Waldorf, Mary settled in quite nicely and formed a solid camaraderie with the women’s soccer team. It wasn’t until August 5th that Mary suffered from a torn calf muscle during pre-season, delaying her debut on the pitch.

Disheartened and unable to train, Mary was determined to keep active, despite being left on crutches for 7 weeks. After receiving permission from her coach, Mary found enjoyment on stage, participating in a 24-hour drama activity run by the Theatre Group on campus.

With a love of soccer, the love of theatre grew stronger. Because of Mary’s injury, she wasn’t sure if she would be able to return to the pitch, so she contacted the Dean’s Office immediately. Soon after, Mary was then awarded a Drama Scholarship for the same value, to replace her soccer scholarship!

As a result of her new scholarship, Mary was required to audition for parts in the Annual Shakespeare Production and Annual Musical and guess what? She landed main parts in both! Quite the accomplishment for just a freshman!

The Shakespeare production, “Comedy of Errors” has had a tremendous response and has been showing all last week. In addition, just this past Saturday, Mary received the exciting news that she has been selected as one of the two to attend a six-state regional festival at the Kennedy Centre American College Theatre Festival in January. This festival is the prelim to the All-American Festival held in the spring of next year.

Proud father, Tim, says, “Soccer is what got her to Waldorf and we are so thankful for all that you guys did. It seems as though it is drama and theatre that will keep her there! Waldorf College has been a perfect fit for Mary. She feels, every day, as though it was meant to be. Kris and I are so thankful for your work, and your confidence in Mary.”

Coach Casey has already welcomed Mary back next year if she would like to take her spot back on the team.
