Skylanders Dominate the 2015 Season!
Sussex County Community College’s women’s soccer team have carried on their most successful season in six years! The team includes Australia’s Olivia Bunge, Febey Pearce, Merrinda Hill and Anna Powell
The ladies entered with a 7-3 game record, a dynamite result that Coach Flores puts down to “…if you create a bond…you will succeed…no bond no team…”
“….With just four players returning from last year’s squad, this year’s Sussex women have strong play from one of those veterans — sophomore co-captain Anna Powell, an Australian who has played through injuries in both seasons, but never let them get her down.
“Anna is a motivator,” Flores said. “She’s the one who really encourages everyone around her, and does a lot of play-making for us.”
In fact, injuries have hit not only Powell but several others.
The team started the season with14 players, which, in itself, isn’t a huge roster for a soccer team. With all the injuries this year, this team has been forced to play almost all their games with just 10 or 11 players…
…The women Skylanders have taken pride in winning games by wide margins with an undermanned team and they’ve established a certain part of their team identity by dealing with adversity all year long.
“Look it happens in every season, you’re going to have those injuries, but I think we can all play every position, and we adapt to it,” Powell said.
Overall, there are six international players on this year’s squad, with players from five county high schools represented on this team…” The Jersey Herald [1]
