Crazy initiation rituals, big-time parties and bad reputations. It’s fair to say this is what us Aussies make of fraternities and sororities in the U.S! We learnt that these stereotypes aren’t entirely true…
American pop-culture portrays fraternities and sororities, and ‘Greek life’ in general to be a whirlwind experience of partying, bizarre initiation rituals and exclusion to the wider campus.
Through our research, we found that there’s a lot more to Greek life than what goes on in the movies!
It’s widely common that most Greek hubs contribute to college life in a variety of ways:
– Prodivde educational services
– Engage in community services
– Organise fund-raisers for local and international causes
– Include campus leaders and athletes as members
– Provide accommodation for a number of college go-ers
– Provide a sense of belonging and community to students far from home
– Have a long lineage of rich history
You know what they say! Not everything is like it is in the movies!
