NSR’s prospect Manager and previous Iowa Central and AIB student athlete, Jacob Richards shares his Halloween Experiences from his time at College
Tell me the secret behind putting together the perfect Halloween outfit?
If you want to save a little money, utilize things that you have around the house. Improvisation is the key to putting together a cheap but memorable Halloween outfit. These tend to be the funniest and the most memorable.
What was the best Halloween costume that you’ve created?
I found two rolls of glad wrap in the cupboard, some snow boots in my room and purchased a $2 white mask. It was without a doubt the best costume on the day. There always has to be one clown on the team. (Attached Picture) Being on a college budget, you will find that most students will improvise as well.
Tell me about the Halloween Experience at college and how does it differ from that in Australia?
- Where we were in Iowa, there were a number of corn mazes that were cut into a pathway, where people in costumes used to hide and scare those walking through the corn Maze.
- I also carved my first pumpkin for Halloween! It was absolutely terrible.
- In the US, there is a lot more going on during Halloween as it is a well celebrated holiday. If you have class on Halloween, you have the opportunity to turn up in your costume. If one of the college teams has a game on Halloween the crowd will turn up in costume and support. The college will always host Halloween festivities on campus.
Have you taken on any Halloween Traditions from the US?
I have not taken too many Halloween traditions back to Australia, but I do post a picture of past costumes up on Facebook, throwback Thursday style!
What has been your best Halloween memory?
Seeing everyone’s costume and seeing what everyone came up with. There were some classics. A few had me in tears.
What do you recommend to new athletes going to College?
Get into the festivities; you’ve only got four years at college so you make the most if it! Join in on the American traditions.
