With only a couple of short weeks left until he travels from country New Zealand to Miami to launch his US tennis/college career, Jordan Petrie is preparing as best he can for the adventure.
Petrie has been working hard as both a tennis coach and on a produce farm operating machinery in preparation for this life-changing event.
Finalising his I20 visa and other documents, Jordan is looking forward to the journey to the US but admits there is an element of nervousness also.
“I’m not sure what to expect, but I’m as ready as I can be,” he said.
“I’m definitely looking forward to continuing my passion for playing tennis while living the college life,” Petrie explained.
Maintaining a high level of match-fitness in preparation for pre-season in August is Jordan’s main priority now as he prepares to work with highly-qualified coaches and athletes.
“Being able to study and play tennis at a high level is something you don’t really get to do in NZ or Australia, so it’s a really good opportunity.
“Being with like-minded athletes, making friends at the same time and training with such a high-calibre coach will improve my game massively,” Jordan acknowledged.
Jordan also highlighted the benefits of learning from past NSR student-athletes’ experiences.
Jordan was also offered a place at Southwestern Christian University, where experienced NSR student-athlete, Keenan Douce studies. Although Jordan accepted an offer to ASA College in Miami, he was appreciative of the helpful advice and tips Keenan provided.
“He gave me some insight which was really cool, he was definitely a massive help in preparing me for what’s to come,” Jordan said.
“Massive thanks goes out to NSR for helping me throughout my journey to the States, I wouldn’t be in this position without their help. I’m ready to start this next amazing chapter in my life!” Petrie said.
Aside from a handful of small family holidays, Jordan hasn’t been overseas alone on an extended trip and admits it can be rather daunting.
“I’ve got mixed emotions. I’m really, really excited, but obviously at the same time I’m a bit nervous of what to expect. Mostly I’m looking forward to it, I can’t wait,” he said.
Petrie will land in the US in August/September ahead of his whirlwind adventure and says the sky is the limit to where he can go.
Jordan will study business administration with a concentration of sport.
As for leaving New Zealand behind, he had this to say:
“Miami is a perfect location. It was the best fit for me, you can’t really turn down 30-degree weather!” Jordan joked.
