CEO of Capital Football, and attendant of every Kanga Cup tournament since its inception, Heather Reid is a very busy lady!
We managed to track her down, to discuss her feelings on this year’s Kanga Cup – the biggest since it’s started.
“I think we’ve been building this for a number of years,” said Heather.
“It’s really quite interesting that people complain about the weather in Canberra in July, yet it’s not a deterrent of people coming interstate,” she said.
Heather believed the impact of social media helped the growth of the event, larger than what Capital Football ever imagined.
“We said last year, ‘What’s our capacity?’. We thought we’d be 300 teams, but look what’s happened this year… 334 or something!” she said.
“I’ve been involved with this pretty much since the beginning of the Kanga Cup 25 years ago, in some capacity or another. It’s just phenomenal that we’re here at this size today.”
The CEO also looked towards next year, and how the event could be improved.
“Our biggest challenge is probably referees more than anything else. We’re looking at perhaps requiring teams to have a referee with them because the young referees are here to learn and develop as much as the young players, and the problem is that they get absolutely exhausted,” she said.
Heather explained that from here, the event can only go “onwards and upwards,” also extending her thanks to NSR Australia “for getting on board.”
Tell us, who is already counting down the days until the NEXT Kanga Cup?!
