It’s hard to believe Rebecca Smith (NSW) has only been playing hockey for a mere two-and-a-half years.
“Compared to many other prospects of NSR, it’s easily less-than-half of the time they have been playing the sport,” Bec explained.
“This doesn’t make me any less determined to achieve though.”
The determined star loves the game for the constant challenge it brings, “minus the bruises”.
Upon starting HSC, Bec began to feel incredibly “upset”, after believing she couldn’t do both at the same time, due to her “extensive and challenging” schooling schedule.
“I was continuously told that I should stay, and that my talent shouldn’t go to waste, even though I did still have much to improve on,” she said.
In what Bec described as a “last go” at hockey, she decided to partake in the Hockey NSW trials with NSR, to “have some fun” before giving it up.
This outlook dramatically changed after learning about the NSR program in depth.
“After reading about NSR, it opened up a whole new world for me,” she said.
“I didn’t have to give up the sport I loved, and I could make it into a whole greater experience,” she continued.
“I love to travel, play hockey and learn, so this was the perfect opportunity for me.”
Bec looks to study a physiotherapy and possibly a dietetics degree as a double when she departs for her journey.
As well as juggling her burgeoning hockey career, Bec shares that her ultimate goal through her NSR experience is to “make a difference in the health industry”.
Bec feels no reservations at all about her journey, and laughs as she shares a quote from her father: “Like my dad keeps saying to me, my head is already on the plane, now I just need to get the rest of me on it!
Wow, we’re loving this positive attitude!
