Seasoned basketball coach Robert Brown is currently a Country Vic Academy coach, running the Ballarat Academy for Under-14’s and the ITC program through Basketball Australia.
Robert has been in the program for “about 20 years”, and also works within the state program, has gone to nationals, and has been an Assistant Coach in the Under-16’s girls program for country Victoria.
“The kids that have come through our academy, and you watch them go on… like Matt Dellavedova had come through our Academy. It depends on the year, you might have a year where you get a 3 or 4 kids that might make state sides then they get on, but then some years you might not get any,” he explained.
Robert urged young basketballers to try out for any opportunity possible.
“You get some kids that don’t think they’re good enough for that, and don’t turn up. We see that our Academy try-outs, kids think they’re not good enough because they don’t make a local rep side, but our selection is different,” he said.
Robert said that going overseas, for young basketballers is “not a bad option” for young basketballers, “academic wise”, and that they would get “more basketball experience.”
Thanks for the insight, Robert.
