With NSR’s College Combine events coming up very soon, we thought we would take this opportunity to introduce you all to the man of the hour, our High Performance Coach, Michael Chiovitti!
Michael has constructed the combines, formally known as the ultimate training day, and will run the events alongside elite coaches in the aim of assessing and analysing athlete’s athletic qualities to identify opportunities for improvement.
Michael is a key member of NSR’s team and will be providing a valuable resource to our athletes.
“I’m primarily responsible for providing a support service to our existing prospects. More specifically, a physical development program and resources designed to guide our prospects in their journey to becoming the best possible athlete they can be,” Michael said of his new role.
With an extensive background in sports science, Michael has a lot to offer and all NSR prospects should consider his knowledge a valuable tool for their self-improvement. Plus, he’s a super friendly guy, so don’t be afraid to get in contact with him!
Michael has worked in the sports industry with the likes of the National Talent Squad (Australian Rugby Union), Coburg and Richmond Tigers (VLF/AFL) and Jayco (who Sponsor St. Kilda and the Melbourne Storm) where he managed the largest High Altitude Training Chamber in the southern hemisphere. From there he moved across into self-employment for several years where he worked with the likes of Sam Soliman (World Champion Boxer), Shane Perkins (Track Cyclist), Sarah Sauvey (Winter Olympian) and the Dandenong Rangers (WNBL).
Just before he joined the NSR team, he spent three years as Head of Operations and Performance with FC11.
So there you have it, your High Performance Coach has had plenty of experience in the sporting world and is here to make our prospects the best athletes they can be!
Michael will be on hand to offer as much support and advice to any prospects who need it and aims for athletes to gain a certain knowledge from his assistance.
“Athletes will hopefully have a better understanding of where they sit with respect to their athletic abilities and their opportunities for improvement within their specific sport,” Michael said.
Aside from the College Combines, Michael is working on providing additional resources such as; webinars, education videos and training programs.
Michael had three pieces of general advice for athletes to best train and prepare for the high standard of athleticism in the US.
1) Get Strong
Use a structured strength program on a regular basis. If you consistently lift in a controlled and safe manner, you’re likely to be powerful and robust which minimizes the risk of injury when you enter a full-time training program.
2) Appreciate and Enjoy Recovery Days
Whether you spend some extra time stretching on a Foam Roller or doing some form of recovery (pool work, beach work, massage), make sure to have structured recovery sessions in your training week and treat them with the level of respect you would any other training sessions.
3) Eat with a purpose
Everything that goes in your mouth will influence the way you think, feel and perform on and off the field. Eat lots of greens, good quality protein (meat, eggs, legumes) and as little processed foods as possible.
Michael had one last important piece of advice for our athletes;
“Stay focused on your goals and dreams. Don’t be in a hurry. You will have moments of failure but you should embrace these moments as valuable opportunities to learn and improve. Ask yourself every day; ‘what can I do today that will make me better than yesterday?’” He said.
The College Combine events will be held in locations across Australia and New Zealand over the coming months and Michael sees them as an incredible chance for NSR prospects.
“They’ll gain some fantastic insight into their current athletic qualities and potential. The College Combine will also provide the athlete with their testing data in a format that could be used to strengthen their athlete profile website which could positively influence the quality of offers they receive from colleges.”
NSR is super excited to have Michael on board. Don’t hesitate to contact Michael if you have any queries about the College Combine or his services as High Performance Coach!
