“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” – Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972.
This short and simple federal law outlines that each sex will receive equal federal funding, from any institution that receives Federal financial funding.
In the USA, this includes almost any institution.
There are three parts to title IX in reference to athletic programs.
- Effective accommodation of student interests and abilities (participation)
- Athletic financial assistance (scholarships)
- And other program components, also known as the “laundry list” of benefits to athletes
