Cross country is a sport that combines speed with grit. It has also been an NCAA sponsored sport since 1938. How much has it grown? It started in 1938 with six men’s teams and now there are four different cross-country running including; men’s individual, women’s individual, men’s team and women’s team championship.
The men’s race is 10, 000 metres and was won individually by Edward Cheserek from the University of Oregon but the University of Colorado took out the team national championship in last years national championship. The University of Arkansas has currently won the most national team championships and Washington State University has won the most individual national championships with seven.
In the women’s competition, the distance is shorter at 6, 000 metres. In last year’s results, Michigan State took out the national team championship and Kate Avery from Iona College took out the individual national championship. Villanova has won the most team national championships with nine as well the most individual national championships with nine.
The next college cross country championships are set to take place on the 21st of November 2015 at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky.
