michael kellyFor his first year in the job, Events Coordinator Michael Kelly has run the biggest Kanga Cup in the event’s history.

A record number of 338 teams signed on to the Kanga Cup, which Michael explained is “a great landmark for the 25th year.”

Michael shared that the event produced overwhelmingly positive feedback from the wider society.

“The response from the parents and the teams and those out there watching has been amazing. It’s been an experience second to none, and that’s what it’s all about… Kids enjoying themselves out on the field and playing through the spirit of the game, but also meeting and getting to know other teams that they don’t usually play,” Michael explained.

Michael explained that it’s been a “blessing” to get the support from NSR Australia, which helped to “lift” the whole experience.

“We’ve worked together and really been able to lift the experience off the field which is a big objective for the Kanga Cup going forward,” he explained.

“We really want to push the experience off the field so when these teams come to Canberra, they’re getting the total package, and a really personalised event, then they go home and tell everyone about it, and hopefully bring more back.”

Michael also highlighted the incredible inclusive nature of the tournament, including teams Australia and world-wide.

“It’s fantastic to come to Canberra, and be able to play teams from right across the state. To be able to play teams from other countries, I have four teams from New Zealand and two teams from Korea!” he said.

Michael also hinted towards the goal of expanding the competition, to include more international teams.
