Australian-Sudanese basketball superstar, Thon Maker, takes the headlines for college basketball. The 7 foot player currently plays for Orangeville District Secondary school and is tipped to have the NBA in his sights.
It has not been smooth sailing for this young basketball talent as he did struggle to perform well within the Nike camp in April this year. In the following months, Thon has shown signs of incredible development in his on court game. Competing in a number of underage tournaments across the US, Maker has become a celebrated athlete within the US community. Maker shares his important tips to taking that next step to becoming a highly sought after basketball player in the US. Highlighting the essential component to game and competition improvement was to ‘bulk up’. Having a naturally slender figure, Maker added and additional 12kgs to his total weight; however, warns that the bulking process takes time. “…People wanted us to bulk up straight away and get playing. That would’ve resulted in injuries and bad plays…”(USA Today) Your ability to maintain and build upon a solid weight will allow may contact sport athletes to recover faster from impact and develop upon their rate of endurance.
Standing as tall as a number of the most famous NBA players at 7 foot, Maker has established himself as a major competitor for the future NBA draft. Maker’s ultimate dream is to come home to Australia and play for the national team.
